EMS NEWS - UPDATES - EMPLOYMENT

 Education and ConEd

02/28/2017

The 30th Annual EMS Update Conference will be held on March 23rd, 24th and 25th

EMS Update 2017, offering over 84 individual classes for both BLS and ALS providers presented by nationally recognized instructors.

From Medical to Trauma and Rescue to Hands on Simulation, EMS Update 2017 provides the Largest Selection of classes at any conference within our local area.

Blood.  Broken Glass. Twisted Metal.  Death.  At some point in our careers, every EMS Provider as asked themselves the question, “Is this job really worth all this?”  All too often, we discover EMS does not love us nearly as much as we love it.  The hours are long, the pay is low and pressures are enormous.  So why do we continue to do it?  Join Kelly Grayson, as our keynote presenter describes a career arc from rookie EMT to experienced paramedic to career burnout and beyond.  You’ll see yourself in these stories and laugh alongside him as we examine how we face Life, Death and Everything In Between.

Kelly Grayson is a Critical Care Paramedic at Acadian Ambulance in southwest Louisiana and is the EMS Education Coordinator for ACE4EMS.  He is an award winning columnist for EMS1.com and EMS World Magazine.  His books, En Route and On Scene, are available through booksellers nationwide.

Last years “First Due” sessions, which were extremely popular with our early risers have been paired with a “Sunset Session” for those that would rather work later into the evening.

FBI Special Agent Phillip Smith will present Thursday’s general session “The Coming Storm”.  An active shooter opens fire, shattering the tranquility of a college campus and forever changing the lives of students, their families and the community.  The ensuing terror and confusion taxes the capacity of local law enforcement and first responders.  The Coming Storm is a unique FBI training tool designed to inspire collaboration among first responders in preparing for and managing these potentially overwhelming events.

You can register online by visiting the website of EMS Update 2017 at www.emsupdate.com.

Exhibit Hall with over 16,000 square feet of vendors will be open for attendees on both Friday and Saturday March 24th & 25th.  There is no charge to visit the Exhibit Hall.

EMS Update 2017 is sponsored by Western Regional EMS and produced by the Emergency Medical Service Institute.

Questions regarding EMS Update 2017 can be directed to Joe Ponko at jponko@emsi.org or by calling 412-494-5572.

Hotel Accommodations can be made by contacting Seven Springs Mountain Resort at 800-452-2223.  Mention EMS Update 2017 to receive the special conference room rate.  Offsite accommodations can be found in both Donegal and Somerset, Pennsylvania.

UPDATE: 2015

Important changes to ChildLine for 2015

I am pleased to let you know that, effective today, December 31, 2014, ChildLine is live with an online system!  This means that EMS providers are able to report suspected abuse or neglect, as well as obtain ChildLine child abuse background clearances, online. For further information, please visit: www.paemsc.org/resources

It is important to note that all EMS providers are mandated reporters of suspected child abuse and neglect.  To report suspected child abuse or neglect, a mandated reporter can now report in one of the two following ways:

  1. Via Phone

  • By contacting the Department of Human Services (formerly Department of Public Welfare) by calling ChildLine at 1-800-932-0313.  When you call, you will speak to a trained intake specialist who will interview you and guide you through the reporting process.

  • In addition to calling ChildLine, a reporter must also fill out the CY 47 form(http://www.paemsc.org/assets/files/CY47%20Form.pdf) within 48 hours of the report and submit it to the county Children and Youth Agency.  A fillable electronic version of the form can be found here (https://reportsuspectedabuse.com).

By making a report online using the following link: https://www.compass.state.pa.us/CWIS

Additionally, ChildLine child abuse background clearances can now also be obtained in one of two ways:

  1. By submitting the CY 113 (http://www.paemsc.org/assets/files/cy113.pdf) form via mail to the Department of Human Services' ChildLine Verification Unit.  The fee associated with the clearance must be paid by money order or business/agency check.  DHS does not accept cash or personal checks.

  2. By submitting online using the following link: https://www.compass.state.pa.us/CWIS.  Aside from allowing individuals to submit for clearances, the online system will allow organizations to set up business accounts to purchase child abuse history clearance payment codes and distribute those codes to applicants. When an applicant uses a code given to them by an organization, the organization will have access to the applicant's child abuse history clearance results once they are processed.

The EMS for Children Program will be hosting a free informational webinar on Thursday, February 05, 2015 at 6pm discussing child abuse and will spend a few minutes discussing these new reporting options.  More information will be sent out early in 2015.  Attached to this email is an FAQ document regarding mandated reporters; please note that EMS providers are not required to complete mandated reporter training, though we strongly encourage it.  We recommend conducting training through the Pennsylvania SCAN EMS Program (http://www.pascan.org/edu_ems.html).
